Pióra ptaków - od archeologii do biotechnologii

Pióra fascynują ludzi wielu specjalności, poczynając od archeologów, poprzez zoologów, kończąc na kreatorach mody. Bez piór nie byłoby prawdziwych lotek do badmintona lub specjalnych przy-nęt dla wędkarzy łowiących „na muchę”. Pióra są jednak najważniejsze dla ptaków, pozwalając im unosić się w powietrzu, przekraczać granice kontynentów, ochronić się przed ekstremalnymi warunkami klimatycznymi, ale też maskować się przed wrogiem, walczyć lub pomagać w pływaniu czy nurkowaniu. Pióra są unikalną strukturą, jeżeli uwzględnić bogactwo struktury i formy (Pawlak, 2009a,b). Poza tym stanowią specyficzną formą ochrony ciała, spotykaną tylko u ptaków, odmienną w strukturze i funkcji do skóry, włosów czy łusek, odporną, przy odpowiedniej pielęgnacji na działanie mikroorganizmów i grzybów, ale też cyklicznie odnawialną. Pióra odgrywają ponadto u szeregu gatunków istotną rolę w zdobywaniu partnera i w relacjach socjalnych. O piórach pisze się nadal dużo w literaturze naukowej. Tylko baza PubMed, dla hasła „pióra i ptaki” (birds and feathers) podaje 3267 publikacji, w tym w ostatnich dwóch latach (2012-2013), odpowiednio 210 i 191.
